Nichole McGuire

Tell me about your dream piece of jewelry.

My dream piece of jewelry would be something in yellow gold with a more vintage and organic feel instead of a modern piece, most likely it would include indicolite tourmaline,  rhodolite garnet and most likely some sizable mine cut diamonds.

In your opinion; what's most important in a diamond? Size, color, cut or clarity.

To me it depends on the diamond type that you want, and then what the most important is to that type of diamond. All of those are important but if it was a emerald cut or a mine cut that doesn’t have a lot of cuts then the clarity would be the most important, but at the same time if the cut was a brilliant cut then the cut would be what allows the light to flow through, which would make more of a difference than the clarity in that cut.

What is your favorite thing about working at Legend Jewelers?

Getting to be creative and use my imagination to create unique pieces.

Describe your dream piece of jewelry.

My dream piece of jewelry changes often. It would definitely be something with colored gemstones and organic in appearance.

Without naming names; describe your most interesting interaction with a customer.

So many to pick from! I'm going to go with the gentleman who surprised his wife with an appointment to design her upgraded engagement ring for their 35th wedding anniversary. He was just so excited! He came in early on the day of their appointment with a beautiful bouquet of flowers and a bottle of champagne to add to her surprise. When they got here later that day, she had no idea what was going on and was very surprised. It was so refreshing to see that kind of care and romance. And getting to work together with them on her special ring, I got to see just how in love they still are after all these years. They are, to date, one of my favorite couples!

What is your favorite gemstone and why?

My favorite gemstone is garnet, because my favorite color is red and you can get so many shades of it with this stone. It also comes in other colors: purple, orange, and green. And geologically, the formation of garnet is very cool to me.

Don't name anyone but, describe your most interesting interaction with a customer.

This man wasn't my customer, but I did interact with him after he purchased a peculiar item. He bought a bra from Miss Hattie's Bordello Museum! Of course, we all asked him why he wanted to buy a bra. He was a women's underwear collector who had temporarily donated his collection to the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts for an exhibit that displayed women's fahion throughout history. The bra he bought from the museum was the same style bra that Marilyn Monroe owned different color, different size). I got his information and went on to interview him for a radio show segment about women's history for Ram Radio at ASU.

Describe your dream piece of jewelry.

I could imagine my dream piece of jewelry being a ring with a 1.5 carat pear shape diamond center surrounded by an aquamarine halo. With a cathedral profile and a straight band, in 14 karat white gold.

What is your favorite thing about working at Legend Jewelers?

The people I get to work with everyday! And of course, giving tours of the Bordello above us!

No names! Describe your most interesting interaction with a customer.

One afternoon, four elderly women came in for a tour. While we were upstairs, coming from the back, towards the end of the tour, we heard footsteps and a door slam. While we were walking back down the staircase, one of them turned back to look at me and asked, "What about the women in the back bedroom?" I looked at her. Looked back towards the hallway. Looked back at her, "We're the only ones in here." Needless to say, we sped down the stairs.

Describe your dream piece of jewelry.

My high school ring that was stolen. It had a faceted alexandrite with a gold "G" English style inlay.

In your opinion; what's most important in a diamond? Size, color, cut or clarity.

Cut. It brings out the best of the diamond.

What's your favorite thing about working at Legend Jewelers?

I don't have to work past 6PM!

Without naming names - what has been your most interesting interaction with a customer?

N/A!! I'm in the shop all day. I NEED A WINDOW!!!

What's your favorite gemstone and why?

Tsavorite (green garnet). Green is a favorite color of mine, and Tsavorite is a much nicer green color than Emerald to me.

Without naming anyone; describe your most interesting interaction with a customer.

A few years ago, we had two of our really fun customers (they're sisters) in the store, when we had a power outage. The power was out for a couple of minutes before it came back on. I left the customers with the rest of the staff, in the front of the store, by the bridal case and went into the shop to make sure the server and equipment was alright. Standard routine.

Back there was when I first smelled the smoke. I warned everyone and Mark and I proceeded to look for the source. The smell led us outside, the AC unit was on fire!

We yelled for the girls upfront to call 911 and hit the power switch to shut off the unit to prevent further damage.

As we evacuated the store, instead of being scared or panicky, the two customers were cracking jokes and talking about how exciting the situation was. We all had a good laugh once we were outside the building, espeically when I carried out one of the employee's heels that I had tripped over because she was in a hurry to get out the door.
